AI companion apps are real, and the numbers are larger than most people assume. The ten biggest platforms pass 130 million monthly active users as of March 2026, according to data.ai, more than double the 2024 figure (data.ai, 2026). Character.AI alone keeps about 20 million of those users chatting an average of 75 minutes a day (Business of Apps, 2026).
These are not novelty toys. The market doubled in two years, the biggest app holds attention figures that make most social networks jealous, and the money is now real enough to attract scrutiny. This is a demographic story showing up as a download graph.
How many people actually use AI girlfriends?
More than a million, by a wide margin. The top ten companion apps serve well over 130 million monthly users, with Replika leading at about 35 million, Character.AI companion mode around 28 million, and Candy AI near 18 million (aigirlfriend.global estimates, 2026). The romantic slice alone accounts for tens of millions.
| App | Est. monthly users | Launched |
|---|---|---|
| Replika | ~35M | 2017 |
| Character.AI | ~28M | 2022 |
| Candy AI | ~18M | 2023 |
| Janitor AI | ~14M | 2023 |
| Nomi.ai | ~9M | 2023 |
Are these user counts actually trustworthy?
They come from the usual industry instruments. Estimates blend Sensor Tower and data.ai usage panels with company disclosures, so expect a wide band between analysts. Even the conservative read is striking: Character.AI itself says 20–28 million monthly active users with 18 million user-created characters (Business of Apps, 2026). The rounding does not change the story.
The punchline lands clearly. Individual apps crossed the “one million” line years ago, and the category as a whole is now measured in tens of millions. Any headline that frames this as a million-user trend is staring at data that is long out of date.
How deep does the emotional attachment really go?
Deeper than net promoters expected. Character.AI users average roughly 75 minutes per day, and 373 minutes per week, with heavy users past 120 minutes (SimilarWeb, 2026). About 52–55% of its audience is aged 18–24, and the top ten characters pull in more than 50% of all chats (SimilarWeb, 2026).
Users form real emotional bonds with the characters they talk to — the input is an hour of attention a day, the output is a companion.
— Luca Moretti
That depth is the product. Companionship apps are built to be sticky by design, with memory, voice and group chat to deepen the bond. The result is a revenue loop where attention turns into subscription, and subscription turns into retention.
Is this a healthy market or a lonely one?
The data points both ways. Replika reported about 40 million registered users and a $2.7 billion Google licensing deal brought Character.AI’s founders back to the lab (The Guardian, 2025). Yet an under-18 age gate imposes selfie scans, and the concentration on the young is what worries courts, boards and regulators: they want to know who is really driving the relationship (Asotools, 2026).
Companionship tech sits right on top of today’s anxiety about loneliness and youth mental health. The product is not the harm on its own; the harm is that a growing share of people treat a chat with software as a partner. That pattern is worth watching closely.
Where is the AI girlfriend space heading in 2026?
Toward consolidation and maturity. The broad category has plateaued around 20 million monthly users for the leader after a 28-million peak in 2024 (Business of Apps, 2026). Niche “unfiltered” apps grew fastest, and investors see an ARR story: Character.AI chases an estimated $50 million in annual recurring revenue (Business of Apps, 2026).
- The top 10 apps pass 130 million monthly users (data.ai, 2026)
- Character.AI: ~20M MAU, ~75 min/day, $50M ARR (2026)
- About 52–55% of its users are aged 18–24
- The top 10 characters collect over half of all chats
What is the bottom line?
AI companionship is no longer a headline. The top ten apps pass 130 million monthly users, the leader alone logged that and keeps growing, and the economics are real enough that regulators are circling. Whether this comforts or isolates depends on what people do with the hours — and the apps are already built to keep them there.
